New Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+ And More — August 25th Guide

News Room

The weekend has returned at last. For whatever reason, this week really dragged for me—maybe because both my kids were home sick from school, making it feel like a week of summer break got torn off and separated from the main, popping back up two weeks into the semester.

Whatever the case, it’s Friday and that means another weekend of new streaming content to go over. Let’s dive right in!

New TV Shows & Movies

Several shows continue airing weekly that I’m keeping an eye on. Hulu’s Raylan Givens spinoff Justified: City Primeval, Apple TV’s Foundation and—for Outlander fans that are eagerly awaiting that show’s return—Men In Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham is airing its second season on Starz. A number of new shows and movies are also out this week.

We’ll begin in a galaxy far, far away.

Ahsoka (Disney+)

I’ve watched the first episode of Ahsoka on Disney+ and it was . . . okay. I’m withholding judgment until I see more. Disney released the first two episodes and I’ve been both busy and unmotivated. Star Wars has been such a letdown outside of Andor that, for the first time ever (since I’ve been old enough) I didn’t watch a new Star Wars release on Day 1. Every prequel movie, every sequel movie, every Disney+ show that had Star Wars in the name, I was there for at launch. I think I’m just tired of my heart being broken.

Still, I thought that outside some pretty janky dialogue and mixed acting, there was some exciting stuff in the opening episode of Ahsoka. The late Ray Stevenson as dark Jedi Baylan Skoll is particularly great. We shall see.

The Winter King (MGM+)

Ever since I heard that MGM was making an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles I’ve been super excited. The Last Kingdom is based on the same author’s Saxon Chronicles, and Netflix did a reasonably good job with that (up until the Seven Kings Must Die travesty).

Unfortunately, I am not at all impressed by The Winter King which feels almost nothing like the books. I’m going to keep watching but my enthusiasm is effectively DOA, alas. You can read my review of the Season 1 premiere right here. And who knows? Maybe for viewers who haven’t read the books this can be an enjoyable Arthurian adventure story.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah (Netflix)

Wednesday may be Netflix’s big Addams Family show, but You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is the streaming giant’s Adam’s family movie—as in, Adam Sandler’s family stars in the lead roles. The film is based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s YA book and stars Sandler’s daughters Sadie and Sunny and his wife Jackie.

Wanted: The Escape Of Carlos Ghosn (Apple TV+)

A multi-part docuseries on the wild true story of businessman Carlos Ghosn, who was arrested in Japan after being caught misappropriating millions from Nissan Motors for his own personal use. After his arrest, Ghosn disappeared—escaping by smuggling himself out of Japan in a musical instrument box. He made his way to Lebanon via Turkey where he remains to this day. In 2020, Interpol issued Lebanon a red notice seeking Ghosn’s arrest. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Amazon Prime Video)

Still far and away my favorite movie of the year, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now free to watch with your Amazon Prime subscription. I cannot stress to you how much I love this movie. It’s hilarious, charming, brimming with D&D Easter Eggs and just a lovely film all around. I think what I love most about it is just how sincere it is. So much modern content is trying to be edgy or makes all its characters sarcastic. Honor Among Thieves is a movie about friendship and loyalty and, well, honor. You don’t even have to be a D&D player to enjoy the hell out of this one. Read my review here.
