New TV Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime And More

News Room

Well, the first weekend of February is upon us. It’s a snowy one here in the mountains, which means it’s the perfect weekend to stay inside and watch movies and TV shows. Since it’s the first weekend of the month, streamers like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and so forth have added a bunch of movies to their catalogues.

On Netflix, you’ll find excellent additions like the animated masterpiece How To Train Your Dragon 2, the mecha-vs-monster flick Pacific Rim and 2013’s The Great Gatsby.

Over on Amazon Prime Video, you can enjoy classics like Basic Instinct, Annie Hall and Fiddler On The Roof. Hulu has added 12 Years A Slave, Jason Bourne and I believe five Twilight movies if that’s your jam.

Then, of course, there’s the new stuff. We all love new stuff!

Okay, on to the new stuff!

New Shows & Movies

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 (HBO / Max)

It’s been a few years since the last season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but it’s finally arrived. The show has been going on for twice as many years as there are seasons, and it’s finally coming to an end. Well, it’s probably coming to an end. We’ll see what Larry David decides. You really never know!

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Amazon Prime Video — Feb 2nd)

Maya Erskine and Donald Glover team up for this spy thriller-comedy based on the Brad Pitt / Angelina Jolie movie from 2005. I’ve really loved Erskine in everything she’s done and Glover is obviously great. I’m not sure the show will be great, but I’m very curious. It’s one of my Top Shows To Keep An Eye On In 2024 list and it’s out today on Amazon.

Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans (Hulu — Feb 1st)

Tom Hollander has been popping up in a lot of shows I’ve been watching recently. He was wonderful in the second season of The White Lotus. I also just finished watching The Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. Hollander was great in that also. Now he takes on the role of writer Truman Capote in a story about Capote’s feud with a number of elite high society women played by Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Diane Lane, Molly Ringwald, Naomi Watts, and Chloe Sevigny. It’s quite the cast, though that doesn’t always translate to good television. I suppose I have mixed feelings about creator Ryan Murphy, whose work I often like but rarely love. We shall see!

Ongoing Series

The following shows are airing weekly on various streamers.

  • Masters Of The Air (Apple TV) is the story of bomber pilots and airmen during World War II. It’s from the creators of Band Of Brothers and The Pacific and I still haven’t gotten around to watching it thanks to getting sucked in to both Deadloch and The Night Of. Both great mysteries!
  • The Woman In The Wall (Showtime) is a very creepy sounding mystery/thriller set in Ireland that is on my list as well. Haven’t gotten to it because, well, see above.
  • True Detective: Night Country (HBO/Max) is the show I’m currently reviewing every Sunday and I really do not like it very much at all, unfortunately. Seriously, if you want a great mystery, Deadloch is far, far superior in almost every way (and has many weird parallels, from the female detectives to the missing tongue to the conflicts with indigenous communities).

Bonus:

Groundhog Day

Not only is Groundhog Day one of my favorite Bill Murray movies, it’s also pretty fitting given today is Groundhog Day. We actually watched this one last year on Groundhog Day. It’s kind of one of those genre-making movies you really have to watch just to be part of the culture. And it’s very funny, which is a nice bonus! (What About Bob? is better, though).

Did I miss anything? Also, what are you watching this weekend? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.
