Olivia Rodrigo Matches One Of Miley Cyrus’s Oddest Billboard Chart Records

News Room

Olivia Rodrigo has firmly claimed her throne on the Billboard charts this week, reigning supreme at No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200. Her latest album Guts debuts in the top spot on the Billboard 200 with more than 300,000 equivalent units moved. At the same time, the title’s lead single “Vampire” has returned to the summit of the Hot 100.

In achieving this dual chart-topping success, Rodrigo has matched a peculiar record previously achieved by only one other pop star in the half-century-long history of the Billboard rankings.

“Vampire,” the chart-topping single by Olivia Rodrigo, has once again secured the No. 1 position in America this week. The track’s resurgence can be attributed to a surge in streams and sales, driven by the recent release of the album Guts, on which the song is featured.

“Vampire” initially debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 upon its release but subsequently began to descend on the chart. Now, after a nine-week hiatus, the song has made a near-unprecedented return to the top, matching a historic record.

According to Billboard, “Vampire” has tied the record for the longest gap between stints at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Only Miley Cyrus had previously experienced such a phenomenon when her single “Wrecking Ball” achieved a two-week run at No. 1 in 2013. Afterward, the song gradually descended the charts but surged back to the peak in December, marking a nine-week interval between its No. 1 appearances.

It’s important to note that there have been instances where songs returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100 after much longer hiatuses. However, these were unique circumstances and it’s not exactly right to compare them to both “Vampire” and “Wrecking Ball.” Those two pop blockbusters experienced this extraordinary event during their initial promotional periods. In contrast, two other beloved tracks, Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” returned to the top of the Hot 100 over multiple years, under distinct circumstances.

“Vampire” marked Olivia Rodrigo’s third No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 when it initially debuted a few months ago. The second single from Guts, titled “Bad Idea, Right?,” also started its chart journey inside the top 10. All 12 songs featured on the album have found a place within the top 40 on the chart this week, becoming immediate hits in their own right.
