Paul McCartney Joins Jimmy Buffett On His First Posthumous Single

News Room

It’s only been a week since Jimmy Buffett passed away, but that hasn’t slowed the rollout plan for an upcoming project. The singer-songwriter’s estate released three new songs on Friday, September 8, and one features a very famous friend.

Just days after his death, Buffett has dropped a trio of tunes: “Like My Dog,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In” and “Bubbles Up.” The tunes are set to be featured on the laidback rocker’s forthcoming album Equal Strain on all Parts, which is slated to drop in early November.

Whether these cuts were always going to come out on September 8 or whether they were moved up as something of a gift to mourning fans isn’t clear, as it doesn’t appear they were announced ahead of time.

Of the bunch, “My Gummie Just Kicked In” is the one that seems to be attracting the most attention online, thanks to the inclusion of another beloved musician. The cut came with a music video that sees Buffett and a host of artists in the studio creating the tune. Included in that bunch is none other than Paul McCartney, who at first appears to be dancing along with Buffett and his friends. McCartney is then seen later in the visual playing what looks like a bass.

Following Buffett’s death on September 1, McCartney took to his Twitter to share some thoughts on his friend’s passing. The lengthy message begins with the former Beatle saying, “It seems that so many wonderful people are leaving this world, and now Jimmy Buffett is one of them.” He continues the tribute by saying, “I’ve known Jimmy for some time and found him to be one of the kindest and most generous people.”

McCartney also stated that, “Right up to the last minute his eyes still twinkled with a humor that said, ‘I love this world and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it’. So many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all, and for mankind as a whole.”

Included in McCartney’s tweet was a section about “My Gummie Just Kicked In.” The superstar musician said that he was “very happy to have played on one of his latest songs.” He then also shared his thoughts on another one of the new cuts, “Bubbles Up,” which McCartney told Buffett that “not only was the song great,” but that “the vocal was probably the best I’ve heard him sing ever.”

Interestingly, while McCartney is one of the most famous musicians in the world and clearly a friend to Buffett, he isn’t officially credited on “My Gummie Just Kicked In.” He is very much in the video, and his name carries plenty of weight, but on Spotify, McCartney’s name doesn’t appear on the cut, either as a featured artist or a songwriter. It seems he came in to play on the song simply for the fun of it, and not the credit.
