Peter Gabriel is set to make a triumphant return with his newly-announced upcoming album, I/O. The title is one of the more highly-anticipated in the pop and rock genres, as it will mark the star’s first collection of new material in decades.
The legendary solo star and Genesis frontman’s new set will be his first proper studio album of original work in more than 20 years. He last delivered a complete album of new music in 2002 with Up.
The journey to I/O has been a lengthy one, as Gabriel has reportedly been working on this project for the past two decades. Fans have eagerly awaited new music from this influential artist, and the wait is almost over.
To give fans a taste of what’s to come, Gabriel shared his first I/O single, “Panopticom,” back in January. It stood out as his first new song since 2016, and it was just the beginning. He then continued to release new tracks on a regular basis, doling one out every month on the full moon.
Gabriel has already released 10 of the 12 songs set to be featured on I/O, and he has two more left to drop before the CD comes out. “And Still” is scheduled to arrive before the end of October, and “Live And Let Live” is set to be released just days before the full album.
Each song from I/O is being released in two versions—the “Bright-Side Mix,” handled by Mark “Spike” Stent, and the “Dark-Side Mix,” which was handled by Tchad Blake. The two will be available on the title together, which is something of a double album. Additionally, a third Dolby Atmos mix, known as the “In-Side Mix,” was expertly crafted by Hans-Martin Buff and will be included with the three-disc version for those who want to hear the slight differences between the tunes.
A press release announcing the album describes I/O as “12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact.”
