Phantom Liberty’ Cinematic Trailer Will Blow Your Mind

News Room

“I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for you.”

Idris Elba’s new Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty character, Solomon Reed, utters these words twice in the new cinematic trailer developer CD Projekt RED just released for the massive expansion. The phrase somehow means very different things each time you hear it.

A couple things: I had a hard time getting into Cyberpunk 2077 when it released. It wasn’t ready for launch, for one thing, and after enough performance issues I decided to shelve it and wait for some updates. Well updates are arriving, and how!

My colleague Paul Tassi has a great rundown of the 2.0 update that will accompany the DLC (even if you don’t purchase the expansion). The expansion itself sounds incredible, opening up a whole new area of Night City and giving us a spy-thriller story to sink our teeth into.

This new cinematic trailer, which gives us a healthy helping of the always magnificent Idris Elba, has me absolutely stoked to play. It’s a great scene, filled with tension and one flash of shockingly brutal violence.

So Mi, aka Songbird, Reed’s protégé, appears to have betrayed Reed in this trailer, seven years before the events of the game itself.

Seven years later, she’s on Space Force One when it crashes, along with president Rosalind Myers, into Night City’s Dogtown district, which serves as the central plot of the new expansion as V and Reed work to rescue the president.

Oh, and CDPR also released a video with Idris Elba reacting to the trailer. Check it out:

Elba is right. The detail and graphics in this cinematic are “bonkers.” Just wow. “Now that is a good trailer,” Elba says as it wraps up. Hell yeah it is. Probably the best I’ve seen all year.

Phantom Liberty comes to consoles and PC on September 25th.
