Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is, by many accounts, one of the most successful albums of all time…and one of its orchestrators is breathing new life into the project.
Roger Waters, the legendary solo musician and co-founder of Pink Floyd, has treated fans to another preview of his forthcoming album, The Dark Side of the Moon Redux. The rocker has dropped a pair of tunes melded into one from the set, “Speak to Me” and “Breathe.”
This time around, the two tracks, which were originally titled “Speak to Me” and “Breathe (In The Air)” and are now “Speak To Me/Breathe,” at least on some platforms, on the first edition of Dark Side of the Moon, have been reworked slightly. Now, they feature a spoken word section, and real fans of the band will recognize the words Waters delivers.
The lyrics to the spoken part of “Speak to Me” and “Breathe” come from Pink Floyd’s 1972 album Obscured by Clouds. They were first featured in the song “Free Four.” Prior to this double release, Waters had already unveiled two other remastered singles from the upcoming album, including “Money” and “Time.” Now, they’re all grouped together on streaming platforms as an EP.
Waters is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon by re-recording the project and changing it. This time around, he’s not including any of the other members of the band. He’s also added in more spoken word sections and removed guitar solos, which may disappoint some longtime lovers of the collection.
About his somewhat controversial decision to re-record and re-release the album, Waters shared in a video that “This record actually deserves a reimagining” because, in his mind, “the message has stood the test of time, the concept has stood the test of time and it’s a really important thing.”
The Dark Side of the Moon Redux will be released in full on October 6.
