Veteran theatre artist Makrand Deshpande, Bollywood star Jackie Shroff, Malayalam star Mohanlal, and Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar also appear in the film in short but special roles. Tamannaah Bhatia also features in the film produced by Sun Pictures.

In UAE, Jailer crossed $2 million on the opening day, as per Box Office Mojo. The film also made a smashing opening gross collection of nearly $7 million and the global collections stood at $11 million on day one. By the end of first weekend, the film had collected $21.3 million in India alone. Globally, it earned $37 million. Jailer earned nearly $33.5 million in the first week of its release in India alone. Globally, it grossed $52.5 million.

In the second weekend of its release, Jailer managed to make nett collections of $6 million. It saw major dip in collections on the second Monday when it registered earnings below a million in India. The nett collections of the movie stand at $35 million in the Indian markets.

Jailer is now Rajinikanth’s second highest-grossing film ever. Rajinikanth’s top grossing film remains S Shankar’s 2018 film 2.0 which also featured Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles. It is also the highest-grossing Tamil ever.

Jailer released at a time when there was no dearth of options for the audience in India. Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, apart from Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar released the same weekend as Jailer. All the films fared well for their budget and screen-share. Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 is ruling the race with nearly $70 million.

Rajinikanth plays the titular role of jailer Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer. Ravi essays the role of his son in the movie while Krishnan plays the superstar’s onscreen wife. The movie traces the life of Pandian. Pandian is a former cop who took a peaceful life after retirement but is forced to return to the world of violence in order to avenge his son.

The film caters to every single expectation that Rajinikanth’s fans and the charisma multiplies in the film given the actor’s age. He has already crossed 70 years. Interestingly, Jailer is not just about the star’s charisma. The film enables him to step out of his comfort zone and flaunt some of acting and perfmormance skilles instead of merely glowing in his own aura and myth.

Jailer is not just a typical masala entertainer but packs in much more, thanks to the filmmaker’s vision, and Rajinikanth’s acting chops. It also offers surprising comic elements, and funny one-liners delivefred by the superstar himself. The flashback and ending sequences offer special delight to Rajinikanth fans.
