Last night’s Ahsoka season 1 finale ended with little resolution and on far more cliffhangers than anything that appeared to be the ending of any character’s journey.
However, like many Disney Plus projects, what exactly happens next here is unclear. A normal TV show would get viewers, and a service would give it a thumbs up or thumbs down for another season. But not Disney, who across both Marvel and Star Wars blends recurring series with one-off miniseries and transitions into movies.
It would seem somewhat baffling if Ahsoka did not get a season 2, and instead was meant to lead straight into Dave Filoni’s announced movie that is supposed to be a culmination of this “era” of Star Wars, which includes The Mandalorian, Grogu, Bo Katan and the rest of the squad over there.
However, Disney has never spoken about a plan for an Ahsoka season 2, like they did when they made it clear Andor would run for two seasons before it bumped into Rogue One. The Mandalorian was renewed for season 2 before the series even premiered.
Ahsoka? Nothing. Just, nothing. We have no clue what Disney’s plan is here, and if it’s just Filoni’s movie, that raises a lot of questions (spoilers)
1) That would mean that a big chunk of the story would have to be yet another puzzle to solve about how to traverse galaxies, given that Sabine and Ahsoka are stuck there.
2) To resolve the Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll storyline, they would have to unfortunately recast the departed Ray Stevenson, and they’d have to dive into a Mortis gods story directly in a film.
3) The Mandalorian would have to have something to do with all of this, and other than vague threats of Thrawn’s return, it doesn’t seem ready to do that.
4) The timeline of when a movie would actually arrive is extremely unclear. It feels like Filoni’s theoretical movie is in the early stages of planning so that’s waiting what, 2-3 years after this finale to continue this story?
It would seem like the most logical thing to do here is to give both The Mandalorian and Ahsoka a new season to set up the upcoming movie, then dive into that if that’s meant to be the finale of all these stories. Though if I were Disney I would worry about ending both Mando and Ahsoka permanently, given that the rest of their Star Wars slate, as Andor will also be over by then, is seriously lacking.
I have absolutely no idea why Disney has never talked about a second season of Ahsoka, especially after that finale, where fans are left wondering what comes next, and no one has any idea if season 2 is meant to exist or if we’re waiting years for a movie. I would expect Disney to clarify soon, and with my luck, it will be right after I publish this article.
