I figured the sports documentary Untold: Swamp Kings probably wouldn’t last all that long in the #1 spot in Netflix’s Top 10 list, and sure enough, it has been dethroned already. The new #1 is something I genuinely have never heard of, a new series called Who Is Erin Carter? It’s a seven episode British miniseries set in Barcelona where a woman’s “violent past” is exposed during a supermarket robbery.
So I am assuming she’s some sort of secret agent or assassin or something and honestly, that sounds great, I’m on board. This is indeed a Netflix original, not a licensed series. It’s also presented as “limited” so no matter how it performs, there’s no season 2 in sight. It stars quite literally no one I’ve ever heard of. It’s got a 60%/72% on Rotten Tomatoes between critics and audiences which is…fine, I guess. Not amazing. We’ll see how it fares in the longer term.
So, Swamp Kings is down to #2, but #3 is the return of The Ultimatum, another of Netflix’s non-Love Is Blind popular reality dating shows. One couple has one person who wants to commit while the other doesn’t, and they all date around with each other to see what they want to do by the end. It’s very weird. Not as good as Love is Blind. Not that Love is Blind is especially good.
Ragnarok is back with its third season, debuting at #3. Painkiller and Depp V Heard have slid further down the list. Suits continues to be one of the most solidly performing shows I’ve ever seen Netflix land from another network, if not the best. It’s been in the top 10 list for ages now, even though hilariously, it never actually hit #1.
The rest of the list is new episodes of the anime Baki Hanma, the fourth season of The Upshaws and HBO’s Ballers, which isn’t giving a Suits-level performance as a licensed show.
We are marching toward an inevitable situation where at some point, the Writers and Actors Strikes will mean that Netflix runs out of new, scripted series. Though many are “in the can” at this point, which is why new ones will still be coming out for a while. After that, I hope you like endless documentaries and seasons of The Ultimatum, Love is Blind and Too Hot to Handle, as that’s where we’re going here.
