Indian star Shahid Kapoor’s new film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya made gross earnings of $7.8 million worldwide since it hit theatres on February 9. The film that features Kapoor opposite Kriti Sanon grossed nearly $5 million in India in five days since its release. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya scored a global gross of $6.6 million in the first weekend.

In North America, it made around $330,000 on the first day of the release. By Tuesday, that number reached to $1 million. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya made $210,00 in the Middle East region. It also made roughly $51,000 opening in the UK. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya made an opening global gross collection of $1.4 million.

On the second day, the film managed a global gross of $2 million. In India, it made an opening collection of $850,000 and the earnings rose to $1.2 million nett collections on Saturday. On the third day, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya made nearly $1.4 million in India. In India, it has earned $3.3 million in nett collection and grossed $3.9 million over the first weekend.

While the opening figures stand good on their own, most film trade experts hoped for a better performance at the ticket windows as Kapoor returns to his hit romantic avatar in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is among the top ten highest-opening Kapoor film in India and in markets outside India. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh remains the actor’s top opening film ever. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya also made it to the list of top opening weekend scores for a Kapoor film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat continues to be Kapoor’s top film with highest worldwide opening weekend score.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is the love story of Kapoor’s robotics engineer (Aryan/Aaru) who falls for a robot named SIFRA. Sanon essays the role of the robot. The robot’s interaction with human beings can be seen as a form of light entertainment, though none of it seems innovative or fresh.

The concept of humans falling for machines or the vice versa may not be too common in cinema, but it is not completely new either. S Shankar explored the angle of a robot falling in love with a human being with his 2010 film Enthiran. Rajinikanth played the robot in the movie while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was the woman that Rajinikanth’s character fell for. Alex Garland’s 2011 film Ex Machina also explored the theme of a romantic relationship between a programmer and robot. Spike Jonze’s Academy Award-winning film Her (2013) also explored a similar theme. Even the cultural contexts seem a repeat from what the public has already seen in the Hindi TV serial Bahu Hamari Rajni Kant which aired in 2016-17.

Kapoor is in a familiar zone where he excels and has also been popular. He fits perfectly in this world of romantic comedy which him the star that he is. He is ably supported by veteran actors Dimple Kapadia, Dharmendra, and Rakesh Singh Bedi. While Kapadia plays Kapoor’s boss and a close maternal aunt, Dharmendra is his grandfather and Bedi his father. Sanon proves, yet again, that she is a wonderful actor – her robotic act is believable and lovable.

The storyline of Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is too predictable, and it takes many wrong turns and twists in the path of a love story between a man and a machine (robot). What could have been an exploration of the man versus machine, emotions versus logic and rational; and the toxic expectation of perfection in a partner, ends up in a typical Bollywood saga of how a young, rich and well-settled man “struggles” to get his Indian family to accept the girl he chose as his partner. Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah have co-directed and co-written the film.
