‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’ Is the Fourth Film In The ‘Hellboy’ Franchise
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the second reboot of the comic book movie franchise, which began in 2004’s Hellboy, director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of creator Mark Mignola’s Darkhorse Comics series of the same name.
Ron Perlman played the title character in the first Hellboy movie and reprised the role as the demon detective character—aka Big Red—under the direction of del Toro for the 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Both of del Toro’s Hellboy films also starred Selma Blair and Doug Jones. David Hyde Pierce also voiced Jones’ character Abe Sapien in the first film.
“I didn’t even take my name off the credits. My name was never in the credits. I didn’t allow that,” Pierce recalled in a June Zoom conversation. “I had seen that Doug was on the set every day, getting into a tank and getting into that makeup and doing the most extraordinary stuff. It was a beautiful performance. And then he went to do the voice of the character in the subsequent movie.”
After the franchise had been dormant for more than a decade, director Neil Marshall rebooted it in 2019 with Hellboy. David Harbour played Hellboy in the first reboot, which also starred Ian McShane and Milla Jovovich.
Rated R, Hellboy: The Crooked Man debuts on PVOD on October 8.
