The Last Airbender’ A Sign Of Things To Come?

News Room

Netflix released the first trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender this week and it’s glorious.

When I heard Netflix was remaking the series as live-action I was worried. Adaptations are tricky, and we’ve seen time and time again how the creators of these shows and movies seem to value their own ideas and political causes more than they do remaining faithful to the original material.

But just look at this work of art:

This follows another wildly successful live-action adaptation, One Piece, which scored big with both critics and audiences largely because it was both a really top-notch production, but also because it stuck pretty close to the original animated series and felt like a genuine attempt to recreate it in live-action, rather than to muck it up with a bunch of political preachiness or make huge changes to the original for no apparent reason (I’m looking at you The Witcher).

Perhaps this is a sign of good changes to come. Perhaps it’s just the old adage that even a stopped clock is right two times a day. Whatever the case, I have high hopes for this. Everything from costume design to casting to the special effects looks bang-on.

Avatar airbends its way onto Netflix on February 22nd, 2024. I can’t wait!
