This Is Miley Cyrus’ Best Chance To Win A Grammy

News Room

For much of her career, Miley Cyrus has been famous and beloved by her fans, but not necessarily a critical favorite. The singer has been scoring huge wins on the charts and selling millions for more than 15 years, but somehow, she’s never won a Grammy. As one of the top-nominated musicians this time around, Cyrus is back to compete for her first honor–and 2024 is easily her best shot at finally winning music’s biggest prize.

At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Cyrus is up for six trophies. That ties her with several other stars, such as Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Olivia Rodrigo, for the fifth-most nods. She’s up for most of the most top honors, and while those are the most competitive, it looks like the former Disney Channel superstar may finally be headed for her first win.

Cyrus’ single “Flowers” is to thank for her current situation–and the likelihood that she’ll become a Grammy winner later today (February 4). The smash, which helped revitalize her career, is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance.

“Flowers” could conceivably win all three, and that wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. The tune was one of the biggest hits in recent memory, and seemingly everyone adored it and applauded Cyrus for writing and performing such a mature track. The track has a real shot at claiming the highly-coveted Record of the Year, and many music industry predictors–including this author–have pegged it as the presumptive winner.

Cyrus also has a great shot at winning Best Pop Solo Performance for the same single. That field is not quite as competitive as Record of the Year, but the singer is up against some of the same tunes in both fields, and voters could go any which way. They may decide that “Flowers” is deserving of both honors, or perhaps that Cyrus should claim one, while the other goes to a different act, like Swift or Eilish.

Song of the Year is also up in the air, but based on early predictions, it doesn’t seem like “Flowers” is the favorite. The prize may instead be given to Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack. The tune is also in the running for the Best Original Song Academy Award, and favor may be shifting toward the young singer-songwriter, even though her track wasn’t the biggest hit of the group.

Beyond “Flowers,” Cyrus has three other categories she’s competing in–though her chances in those fields don’t seem quite as good. Her latest full-length Endless Summer Vacation is a contender for both Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year, but it’s not a likely winner in either. She and Brandi Carlile are also up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their collaboration “Thousand Miles,” but again, that tune is not expected to come away with the prize.

Cyrus has been nominated for Grammys in the past, but this latest ceremony is far and away her best showing. Before the nominations were rolled out in late 2023, the singer had only earned a pair of nods. Her set Bangerz was up for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2015, and in 2022, she was nominated for Album of the Year as a featured artist on Lil Nas X’s Montero.

In both instances in the past, Cyrus was not anticipated to win a Grammy, and she didn’t. For much of her early career, the actress and singer was seemingly not taken seriously enough by the Recording Academy to warrant recognition. In the years since she earned her first nod, many fans and some in the industry have suggested that she may be overdue for more nominations, at least, if not a win, but thus far, that hasn’t come true.

The winners of the 2024 Grammys will be announced during a live telecast on CBS on February 4, 2024.
