Toby Keith passed away unexpectedly–at least as far as his fans were concerned–on Monday (February 5). The country musician was 62, and he reportedly died in his sleep of cancer. In the wake of his passing, which has rocked the country genre, the singer-songwriter dominates iTunes as fans rush to buy some of his biggest and most beloved singles.
At the time of publishing, Keith occupies 33 spaces inside the top 100 on iTunes’ U.S.-only chart. The late country icon now claims one-third of the entire ranking for himself with a slew of past hits.
Keith doesn’t sit at No. 1–at least not yet–as that honor is reserved for Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” which is still benefiting from her performance at the Grammys. While he hasn’t yet climbed to the summit, Keith is present inside the highest tier on the tally. The country musician fills half of the spots inside the top 10 on iTunes.
The country star’s highest-ranking hit at the moment is “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” which blasts onto the ranking of the bestselling songs in the U.S. on iTunes at No. 5. He occupies the next four rungs as well, owning nearly the entire lower half of the top 10. His singles “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” “As Good As I Once Was,” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!” sit at Nos. 6, 7, 8, and 9, respectively.
Looking at the next 10 spaces, Keith’s name is seemingly everywhere—again—as he claims half a dozen bestsellers between Nos. 11 and 20. Keith’s hits like “I Love This Bar,” “American Soldier,” “Red Solo Cup,” and “I Wanna Talk About Me” can all be found in that region.
Some of Keith’s most beloved tunes appear more than once on the iTunes chart, as they’re available in different forms. This may be due to the tracks being released as both singles and on albums, with both being options to buy, or perhaps in slightly tweaked versions.
All the sales of Keith’s catalog will surely have a major impact on the Billboard charts next week. If even some of his biggest singles continue to sell well, he may dominate a number of rankings in a few days when they’re refreshed, such as the Hot Country Songs, Digital Song Sales, and Country Digital Song Sales lists.
