Happy October, everybody! I can’t believe we only have three months of 2024 left! Three months and three big holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s kind of interesting how weighted the end of the year is when it comes to these things. I keep saying we need another similar feast day in February (Valentine’s Day doesn’t count). We need something with lights and fire, some little beacon in the middle of the deep, dark winter. A midwinter’s feast.
For now, it’s bright and warm and sunny still. Let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.
I chose LEAFY for my opening guess because I wanted to go with something thematic and tied to the season for this first day of October. It was . . . not good. 536 words remained! Ouch! CRONE slashed that number to 31, and ETHOS only cut that down to 16. With just two yellow boxes still—though I’d exhausted almost every slot for each letter—I made a very lucky guess. I could only think of MODEM and VIDEO at this point, though clearly there were other options, and I picked MODEM. Somehow, it was the Wordle!
Competitive Wordle Score
A total wash again. 0 for guessing in four and 0 for tying the Bot. Oh well! Better than losing!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “modem” is a blend of the words “modulator” and “demodulator.” A modem is a device that modulates digital signals into analog signals for transmission over telephone lines and then demodulates them back into digital signals for a computer to process. This technology was crucial for early internet and data transmission systems over telephone lines.
