Legendary Irish rock band U2 continues to solidify their dominance in the alternative rock genre with their latest single, “Atomic City.” The tune has become a quick and momentous hit on a number of Billboard charts this week, and on one specific ranking, the group furthers their lead over another one of the most successful acts in alt rock history with this latest smash.
“Atomic City” debuts at No. 27 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. The ranking focuses on the most-played tracks at alternative radio stations in the U.S. each week. With another win on the tally, U2 extends their record as the act with the most placements on the tally in its decades-long tenure.
With “Atomic City,” U2 has now snagged a total of 43 appearances on the Alternative Airplay chart. This milestone sets them apart from all of their contemporaries, and they further the distance between themselves and the next-most-successful names. According to Billboard, both the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam are the closest to U2 at the moment, with 40 entries each.
More than half of U2’s 43 entries on the Alternative Airplay chart—23, to be exact—have broken into the top 10 on the tally. Of that sum, eight have risen all the way to No. 1.
U2 last dominated the Alternative Airplay chart nearly 20 years ago. Back in 2004, their single “Vertigo” from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb rose to No. 1. A few years later, in 2009, they’d collect their most recent top 10, with “Get On Your Boots” from their follow-up set.
“Atomic City” is currently not connected to any full-length, and the band doesn’t seem to be hinting that it will be attached to one in the future. The track appears to have been released to continue to hype their Las Vegas residency at the newly opened venue, The Sphere.
