Disney’s latest animated series, Wish, is finally coming to streaming soon. Ready to plan your next family movie night? Find out when Wish will be available on Disney Plus and digital services.
Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, Wish tells the story of a 17-year-old girl named Asha (Ariana DeBose) in the Kingdom of Rosas. When she discovers a dark secret about Magnifico (Chris Pine), her land’s benevolent ruler, she pleads with the stars for help — leading her to a fateful encounter with a magical, trouble-making star that has fallen from the sky. The voice cast features DeBose, Pine, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Harvey Guillén, and Evan Peters.
“Well, first of all, Ariana is Asha. She embodied Asha right from the beginning. And she’s relatable. She’s quirky, and you’ll see the animation, everybody builds on that,” said Wish producer Peter Del Vecho in an interview with ScreenRant. “But it was also important that Asha actually has a range of things. She’s smart, she’s witty, but she also is willing to stand up for injustices in the world… Her wish is a selfless one, and she really wants those wishes and she sees the injustice of those wishes being held by Magnifico and wants to return them to everyone. So that part of the story was integral.”
As for Pine, who portrays the movie’s antagonist, Del Vecho revealed that he and fellow producer Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones were trying to figure out his character. “It was a hard one to crack because the story required this character to be someone that you willingly give your wish to,” Del Vecho added. “So he needed to seem like someone that was trustworthy and charismatic, but then he is the villain because he reveals his true self when someone goes against him.”
At the box office, Wish fell below projections to gross $19.5 million in its three-day domestic opening weekend. The film also trailed behind the opening weekend of nearly every other film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, only surpassing the openings of a few flops like Strange World and Raya and the Last Dragon, Forbes reported back in November.
On Rotten Tomatoes, verified film critics gave Disney’s new animated film a 48% score based on 216 reviews, while audiences rated the movie higher at 81% from more than 1,000 verified ratings.
