Seafood enthusiasts, rejoice: while afternoon tea hasn’t had much to delight pesca-fan-ians over the years (bar, perhaps, a luxurious prawn sandwich or two). London’s iconic J. Sheekey restaurant has unveiled its latest and most extravagant offering yet – the ‘Afternoon Sea’.
A departure from the conventional high tea experience, this limited-time culinary spectacle promises to guide diners through the bounties of the ocean, all within the vibrant ambiance its newly adorned ‘Floral Symphony’ terrace.
Priced at £150 ($193) for two, the Afternoon Sea package includes a bottle of Nyetimber Sparkling Rosé MV (a personal favorite) alongside a decadent Plateau de Fruits de Mer, including oysters, dressed crab, Atlantic prawns, mussels, clams, ceviche, cockles, whelks and langoustine.
So, yeah, a slight improvement on those smoked salmon-and-cream cheese triangles of yesteryear.
Still, the Afternoon Sea is much more than a gimmick—it’s an ode to the iconic restaurant’s 127-year heritage.
The brainchild of Josef Sheekey, an esteemed oyster trader in the late 1800s, ‘Sheekey’s’ restaurant first opened its doors in St Martin’s Court in 1896.
Over the years, it has become a cherished institution, renowned for its impeccably-sourced seafood delicacies and its historical ties to London’s theatre scene (which it is, conveniently, situated right next to).
Under the culinary stewardship of Chef Director Tim Hughes and Executive Chef Andrew McLay, J. Sheekey continues to captivate food enthusiasts with classic dishes that have stood the test of time.
The pièce de résistance, of course, now being the Afternoon Sea For Two. It offers incredible value (see: a $50 bottle of bubbly and more seafood than most could consume in a day) and a perfect excuse to indulge in a little afternoon delight.
The ‘Afternoon Sea for Two’ is available Monday to Friday from 2-4pm.
