As physician burnout exacerbates the U.S. doctor shortage, residents are receiving more job offers than at any time in the last three decades, according to a new report.
The majority of physicians coming out of residency – about 56% – received 100 or more job solicitation offers during the course of their training, according to new data from the healthcare staffing company AMN Healthcare’s Physician Solutions business.
The number of job offers these residents received is the highest number since AMN in 1991 first conducted its annual survey of final-year medical residents. There were 78% of residents surveyed who received 51 or more job solicitations, AMN Healthcare’s analysis showed.
By comparison, only 30% of physicians coming out of residency were solicited more than 100 job opportunities in 2021. And 32% of residents surveyed in 2021 received 51 or more job offers, AMN said of its survey, which is conducted every other year.
“Physicians coming out of training are being recruited like blue chip athletes,” said Leah Grant, President of AMN Healthcare Physician Solutions. “There are simply not enough new physicians to go around.”
