Some bad news for those considering a career change after one yogurt company’s job advert for a ghostwriter position went viral for paying the big bucks — the position has been filled.

On August 17, New York-based yogurt company Chobani posted an advert on its website and LinkedIn, offering between $185,600 and $278,400 in annual compensation — excluding bonuses — for a role writing on behalf of its CEO Hamdi Ulukaya.

The executive writer position entailed writing speeches, blogs, and other pieces of content. The company was looking for someone with “exceptional writing and storytelling skills” and 15 years of work experience. 

And even though the job post now has a note that says, “Sorry, this position has been filled,” at the time of writing, over 600 people had applied for the job through LinkedIn, per Insider’s scan.

It is not immediately clear how many people applied to the company directly. At the time of publication, the company has not announced who got the job. 

For context, ghostwriters typically make between $39,956 and $63,626 in the US, according to compensation data platform salary.com.

Other roles advertised by Chobani include a national account manager — with compensation up to $163,200 — and an automation controls engineer — making up to $127,200.

Still, the writing role’s salary provoked a flood of social media reactions from people wondering if their future lies in yogurt.

“PEOPLE IT IS TIME TO START WRITING ABOUT YOGURT,” wrote X user Lisa Lucas on Thursday, in a post that has been seen over 4.2 million times on the platform.

 

“Suddenly considering a mid-career switch to professional yogurt shill,” another X user posted. User @FrancisOKC added, “brb pivoting to yoghurt.”

The job posting also resulted in endless puns about Chobani’s active work “culture.”

Salary reactions like these could become more prevalent, thanks to New York’s pay transparency law, which comes into effect on September 17. This mandates New York employers to share salary ranges for their job listings.

In 2022, Chobani had an over 20% share of the US yogurt market, with sales exceeding $2 billion. However, the company decided to drop its IPO plans due to adverse market conditions.

Ulukaya is a Turkish immigrant of Kurdish descent and made headlines for hiring refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan in 2016. His company is known for its grassroots and cause-led marketing.

Chobani did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment, sent outside regular business hours.
