Celebrate National Tequila Day with George Clooney, Michael Jordan and Nick Jonas

News Room

Here’s a perfect way to celebrate National Tequila Day, which happens to be today: Have a drink with your favorite celebrity.

In recent years, a number of celebrity-owned or celebrity-branded tequilas have hit the market — and all can go into a margarita, the cocktail that makes plentiful use of the agave-based spirit. We’ve sampled some bottles for our Weekend Sip column and thought it would be worth revisiting them in time for any National Tequila Day festivities.

Casamigos: The George Clooney tequila

Clooney partnered with nightclub impresario Rande Gerber in creating Casamigos, which launched in 2013. In some ways, this is the anti-margarita tequila. “Our idea was to make the best-tasting, smoothest tequila whose taste didn’t have to be covered up with salt or lime,” said the movie star at the time of the tequila’s release. Still, there’s no stopping you from mixing it. Either way, the brand has been a runaway success — to the point that Clooney and his partners eventually sold it for a cool $1 billion.

Cincoro: The Michael Jordan tequila

What do you do after you step down for a legendary career in the NBA? Make tequila, of course. That’s the challenge that Michael Jordan gave himself in launching Cincoro with some NBA team owners a few years ago. The tequila is distinctive for its long-necked, multi-sided bottle, but Emilia Fazzalari, one of the forces behind the brand, told us that it’s made from the ”highest quality” agave. The brand recently took things to the next level by introducing a $350 bottle.

Villa One: The Nick Jonas tequila

Pop star Nick Jonas is a relative newcomer to the tequila game: He and fashion designer Nick Varvatos introduced Villa One in 2019. Originally, he and Varvatos were planning to collaborate on a fragrance, but they switched gears for a simple reason: “We both love tequila,” Jonas told MarketWatch via email. He added that he likes mixing it in a spicy margarita, but also uses it in a Bloody Maria (a variation on a Bloody Mary).
