‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Gets An Unfortunate Release Date

News Room

Every week, my wife asks me if I know when Bridgerton season 3 is coming out, since I do this for a living. Every week I say no. Well, this week, I finally have an answer for her.

Netflix has announced that Bridgerton season 3’s release date will arrive a good distance away from now, and premiere on May 16, 2024. But that’s just part one, the first four episodes of eight. The second part will arrive a month later on June 13, 2024. This is what Netflix does with its most popular shows now. Sometimes they claim it’s to finish post-production, but most of the time it’s to split the season so people talk about it for longer, without moving to a full weekly release schedule, which secretly, I think is ultimately what they want to do.

This does seem far away, and it is. Bridgerton season 1 premiered on December 25, 2020, and season 2 premiered March 25, 2022, about 15 months later. So season 3 is over two years later, about 27 months or so. However, the gap between seasons 2 and 3 did give us the six episode prequel series, Queen Charlotte, which no doubt most fans watched.

Season 3 focuses on Penelope Featherington, probably my favorite character on the show, given that actress Nicola Coughlan is from one of my favorite comedies, Derry Girls. Netflix also has a lengthy synopsis for the season, based of course on the book source material:

“From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly. Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.”

So yes, while I did tell my wife when Bridgerton’s season 3 release date was, she was disappointed, as she figured it would be later in December. Instead, it’s another six full months away, and the gap between these seasons has been extremely long. Sorry I don’t have better news.
