- Elon Musk said a cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg “might actually happen.”
- Talking in a Twitter space, Musk said the fight could go badly for him given his lack of experience.
- Some believe Zuckerberg’s jiujitsu skills would give him an edge over the Tesla CEO.
Speculation that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg could actually get in a ring and fight each other just won’t go away. And now the Twitter owner says such a battle might actually take place.
Since Musk appeared last week to jokingly challenge the Meta CEO and amateur jiujitsu fighter to a cage fight, momentum has gathered. Zuckerberg took the bait, telling Musk to send him a location for the bout, with a Meta representative telling The Verge that the CEO wasn’t joking.
Dana White, the CEO of UFC, said he spent an hour and a half talking on the phone to Musk and Zuckerberg following the comments, concluding that both were “dead serious” about fighting.
Musk appeared Saturday on a Twitter Space hosted by the Bloomberg reporter Ashlee Vance about the rise of commercial space — but the first question was about the brawl.
Speaking from what he said was a friend’s birthday party in Europe, Musk said: “Well I haven’t started training yet. If it does happen, I will train.”
Musk is taller and heavier than Zuckerberg, but his lack of mixed-martial-arts experience has most observers, including Insider’s Hasan Chowdhury, concluding he would be likely to lose.
“I spend my time according to what is needed, and I don’t usually have to fight people,” Musk said in the interview.
Combat sports used in cage fighting include not just Zuck’s favored jiujitsu but also kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and boxing. It’s unclear what approach Musk, who has a much larger frame than Zuckerberg, would use in the octagon.
Zuckerberg’s jiujitsu skills are well known, and Vance said he “takes this stuff pretty seriously” and “this could go badly.”
Musk replied “yeah that’s possible,” but concluded: “I think it might actually happen.”
It could be a physical end to the yearslong antipathy between the pair, which is said to have involved slights at each other’s successes.
