At last, the dog days of summer are here. July has ripened and August is just around the proverbial corner. Winter is coming. And a Lannister always pays his debts.
August was named after Augustus Caesar, the first true emperor of Rome. His real name was Gaius Octavius, but he changed that to Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus—after his maternal great-uncle—when he founded the Roman Empire. Unlike Julius Caesar, he was not murdered by jealous Senators, but died at the ripe old age of 77.
Augustus ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD and his reign was known for its lasting peace. The Principate would rule for another three hundred years until the Crisis of the Third Century, when Rome began its long descent into anarchy, plague and other woes. Fun times, basically.
Speaking of fun times, let’s solve the last Strands of July, shall we?

Today’s Strands Breakdown
Another tricky Strands today! I’m enjoying this game more and more these days thanks to these more challenging puzzles. I got a bit, ahem, stuck on this one. Even though I’d found GLUE and TAPE, I was not expecting words like CARAMEL. And I got really stuck on BUBBLEGUM because I didn’t see one of the three B’s for a spell. I also found STICKY but it confounded me because I didn’t see STICKYSTUFF—the spangram—until I’d cleared out almost every other word. Well done, New York Times games! Well done.
