On Forbes Newsroom, County Executive for Prince George’s County Angela Alsobrooks spoke about her “historic” campaign to be the next senator from Maryland.
Alsobrooks, a Democrat, is running to replace long-time Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) who announced his plan to retire earlier this year.
Congressman David Trone (D-MD), a three-term member of the House of Representatives, is also running for the seat. He is the founder of alcohol retailer Total Wine & More.
Despite Trone putting $10 million of his own money into the race, Alsobrooks is confident in her fundraising and the viability of her own campaign.
“The fundraising that we have done so far has been historic in nature,” she says.
Alsobrooks says reducing crime and bolstering the economy have been two of her main areas of focus as County Executive and previously as State’s Attorney. This week, Alsobrooks announced the FBI headquarters will be relocated to Greenbelt, MD.
If Alsobrooks wins, she would be only the third Black woman ever elected to serve as a United States senator. Although she acknowledges the historic significance of her potential win, she believes it will be her extensive experience that will be what wins over voters.
“I am not a stranger to accomplishing things and getting things done,” Alsobrooks says. “And I’ll continue to do that as a US senator.”
