Everton football club has been docked 10 points for breaching the English Premier League’s financial rules in the 2021/22 season, the toughest sanction meted out to a top tier club.
An independent commission appointed by the league said on Friday the deduction would take place immediately, leaving Everton second from bottom of the league with four points. The club is expected to file an appeal.
“We have no doubt that the circumstances of this case are such that only a sporting sanction in the form of a points deduction would be appropriate,” the commission said in its findings. “The size of the points deduction is to be determined by Everton’s culpability.”
The penalty comes two months after Miami-based investment fund 777 Partners agreed to buy Everton for an undisclosed sum from its current owner, British-Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri.
The two sides had previously said they expected to close the deal by the end of this year.
