Madonna makes a triumphant return to one specific Billboard chart this week with her latest collaboration with The Weeknd and Playboy Carti, a single titled “Popular.” After being away from the Hot 100 and the Digital Song Sales charts for years made her way back, and the iconic superstar even managed to reach new heights on several genre-specific lists, reaffirming her status as a musical force to be reckoned with.
Now, just a short time after “Popular” hit a handful of Billboard charts, it’s still going strong and reaching others, bringing the singer back after a lengthy stay away from one of the most competitive tallies.
“Popular” debuts on the latest edition of the Pop Airplay chart, a weekly ranking compiled by Billboard that lists the songs with the largest audience at pop radio in the United States. The tune lands at No. 35 out of the 40 available spots. This achievement marks Madonna’s first appearance on the Pop Airplay chart in over eight years, emphasizing that this cut really is something of a comeback.
The last time Madonna graced the radio ranking was back in 2015 with her single “Living For Love,” which peaked at No. 38. That said, the last time she rose even higher was three years prior, when Madonna’s album MDNA spawned two successful tracks. “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., reached No. 24, followed by “Girl Gone Wild,” which climbed to No. 38.
Despite being widely regarded as the Queen of Pop, Madonna has surprisingly only secured one No. 1 hit on the Pop Airplay chart throughout her illustrious career. In 1995, her smash hit “Take a Bow” reigned at the summit, solidifying her status as a chart-topping powerhouse.
Joining a select few tracks that made their debut on the latest edition of the Pop Airplay chart, “Popular” finds itself trailing behind Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” which claims the highest start of the frame, but it does beat out a handful of new arrivals from up-and-coming acts.
